Beyond the Backpacks:
Katie Knapowski’s Call to Serve
“What began as a once-a-year event quickly became a source of fulfillment as she saw the power of St. Luke’s in action.”
Like so many who find their way to St. Luke’s, Katie Knapowski and her husband Greg were searching for a place where warmth, acceptance, and opportunities for growth were abundant. As a busy mother and professional, Katie wanted to get more involved but struggled to find something that fit her hectic schedule while also offering deeper meaning.
When the opportunity arose to take over the LSSI backpack project from a long-time leader, Katie found exactly what she was looking for. The project, which provides foster children with high-quality school supplies, was more than just a logistical challenge. It became Katie’s way to give back in a meaningful way—ensuring that these children started the school year with pride, carrying brand-new supplies just like their peers. She took on the responsibility of organizing bulk orders, applying for endowment funds and seeking other financial support, and coordinating volunteers.
What began as a once-a-year event quickly became a source of fulfillment as she saw the power of St. Luke’s in action. She marveled at how the church community rallied together, each person playing a role, no matter how small. As Katie recalls, “Watching the church in action in force is amazing. Not a single person needs to show up, but they do, and it’s incredible.”
Over the years, Katie has found joy in organizing the event, not because it wasn’t without obstacles, but because it brought the congregation together in love and service. Each year, she looked forward to “Backpack Sunday,” knowing that these efforts gave foster children the tools to start the school year with confidence.
Katie’s journey is a testament to how one act of service can transform both the giver and the receiver. The LSSI backpack project not only filled a void in Katie’s life by offering her a meaningful way to contribute, but it also helped her grow deeper in faith and connection to her church. Through your continued support of St. Luke’s, you are empowering more individuals like Katie to find their calling and make a lasting impact on others.
