Finding Home: Alex Birdwell’s Story
When Alex and his family first came to St. Luke’s, they were looking for a welcoming congregation to raise their children in the Lutheran faith. Having had limited and often excluding experiences with churches growing up, Alex desired a different experience for his family. He found this welcoming community at St. Luke’s, where Pastor Alex LaChapelle’s inviting presence and the warmth of the congregation immediately made them feel at home. Through Sunday school, coffee hours, and joining the choir and flute choir, Alex found a community that supports and nurtures his family’s spiritual growth.
At some point or another, we all were ‘new’ to this community of faith. Alex Birdwell, shares a beautiful testimony of how St. Luke’s has made a profound difference in his life and the life of his family. Alex describes himself as “a parent, partner, son, brother, teacher, engineer, and mixed-race Southerner living in the Midwest,” passionate about exploring new places and supporting others. What a gift Alex is to St. Luke’s. And what a gift St. Luke’s is to so many.
After almost ten years at St. Luke’s, Alex feels part of a community that embraces questions and exploration. He appreciates that our church has giving at its core, providing a space for worship, pursuing passions, and engaging broadly beyond our walls.
My hope is that St. Luke’s continues to be known as a welcoming place, especially for those who come unsure and tentatively, and that everyone can pursue their passions and find others willing to join them on their journey.
