2024 Synod Assembly Reflections
This year’s assembly was a delight…in some ways because I had nothing to do with planning it! And also, because these are always occasions of reunion with siblings in Christ, powerful worship, and thought-provoking conversation around important topics in the life of our church and world.
As I shared in my sermon last Sunday, the keynote speaker was particularly engaging.
Tonika Lewis Johnson is a photographer, multi-media artist, and life-long resident of Englewood on Chicago’s South Side. Her speech was particularly focused on two of her projects: The Folded Map, and Inequity for Sale. Check out these links…they have great videos that explore these projects. I think they are more tangible and human ways of exploring the impact of racism in our city than we are often presented.
In other news, I was elected to serve as voting member to the 2025 Churchwide Assembly, where we will consider significant proposals related to my previous work in the synod office, and elect a new Presiding Bishop. Pr. Julie Grafe, who recently joined the congregation, was also elected.
