FROM THE PASTOR
Hospitality to Strangers
The second reading of this Sunday comes from Hebrews 13:1-8, 15-16. In verse 2, the author of the text shares a command with their readers: “Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by doing that some have entertained angels without knowing it.”
In our work, we have the privilege of visiting with companions in Mexico, Cuba, Guatemala, Suriname, El Salvador, Guyana, Honduras, Jamaica, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica. During our visits, we experience wonderful hospitality from our companions: excellent conversation, worship, meals, water, transportation, and even accommodations. I struggle with this command in Hebrews in part because in our experiences, those who provide the hospitality are the angels. And yet, on the other side of the coin, when we are able to host visitors and neighbors, we try our best to show hospitality, in part because of this command…we entertain angels…we are blessed by the presence of our neighbors, of those who we meet.
Whether we are the receivers of hospitality or the providers of hospitality, hospitality draws us into deeper relationships with our neighbors, relationships that are the lived expression of God’s presence amongst us and in Creation. As you welcome us into your midst this weekend for a time of worship, of communing, and sharing of stories and fellowship, we are blessed by your hospitality and you are our angels as you continue to pray for us, pray for our companions, and support us in our ministries.”
