How many stories from the gospel of Luke, or stories related to him, do you see represented in this window? See below!

Angel Chorus Sings “Glory to God in the highest and peace on earth”  Luke 2:13-14 above the image of Saint Luke.

Panel 1:
Prodigal Son  Jesus teaches his followers about God’s forgiveness.  “Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you; I am no longer worthy to be called your son;” Luke 15:11-32

The Chalice  is a symbol of Holy Communion and the forgiveness of sin won by Christ’s blood, shed on the cross.  Then he took a cup, and after giving thanks he gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you; for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.” Matthew 26:26-28

Panel 2:
Fish IXOYC  The initial letters of the Greek phrase, “Jesus Christ, Son of God, Savior,” form the Greek word ICHTHUS, which means “fish.” This symbol was used by believers in the early days of persecution as a secret sign of their shared faith. One person would draw an arc in the sand, and the other would complete the sign to show his brotherhood in Christ.

Road to Emmaus  After his resurrection, Jesus reveals himself to two followers as he journeys with them and in the breaking of bread. They said to each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he was talking to us on the road, while he was opening the scriptures to us?” Luke 24:13-35

Panel 3:
Winged Ox, Symbol of Saint Luke The Ox is a traditional symbol for a valuable sacrifice, as Christ was a sacrifice for our sins.

Saint Luke holding the Scripture A closed book represents the New Testament; a scroll commonly represents the Old Testament. Saint Luke is the author of the Gospel of Luke.

Beloved Physican  According to tradition, Saint Luke is believed to have been a physician.  The bottles of medicines and the mortar and pestle are a symbol of his trade. Colossians 4:14

Panel 4:
The Agnus Dei (Latin for “Lamb of God”) may appear in several postures. Seated on a book with seven seals, it represents the final judgment when Christ returns in glory.  The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him and declared, “Here is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!” John 1:1-30Revelation 5:11

Jesus teaching his Disciples  Much of Luke’s Gospel is filled with Jesus’ teachings.

Panel 5:
Good Samaritan  Jesus’ teaching about how Christians ought to live in their relations with others.  “He said, the one who showed him mercy.” Jesus said to him, “Go and do likewise.” Luke 10:29-37

Hands of Blessing  The Priestly blessing.  “TheLord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face to shine upon you, and be gracious to you; the Lord lift up his countenance upon you, and give you peace.” Numbers 6:22-27
