From Stranger to Family
Sylvia’s Journey of Faith
“Over time, St. Luke’s has become her spiritual gym, a place where her faith is exercised and strengthened through meaningful relationships and acts of service.”
Sylvia’s spiritual journey began in an unexpected place. Growing up in China, she wasn’t raised in a Christian home, and she didn’t find her faith until later in life. After moving to the United States, Sylvia was seeking more than just a church service—she longed for a place to grow in faith and community, a place where she and her family could find belonging.
When Sylvia knocked on the doors of St. Luke’s for the first time, she was greeted by Pastor Johnson, whose open arms reflected the very warmth and welcome she had been searching for. Though a stranger to the community, Sylvia felt immediately embraced, and her journey of faith began to take deeper roots in this new home.
What changed was more than just a membership—it was a transformation of spirit. Through Bible studies, fellowship, and worship, Sylvia’s connection to St. Luke’s grew stronger. Her experiences, from being welcomed by outreach members to volunteering with Sunday Night Suppers, solidified her sense of belonging. As she recalls, “Our family friends increased. More and more people opened their arms and embraced us.” These acts of hospitality and service guided Sylvia’s growth, offering her a place not just to learn but to lead.
One of the most profound moments in Sylvia’s journey occurred when she stood in front of the painting *The Risen Lord* during the church’s Art Exhibit. In that image of Christ, with open arms and hands marked by red nail wounds, Sylvia saw a reflection of the community she had found at St. Luke’s. Like Jesus, this church had embraced her, invited her in, and provided the guidance she needed to continue her faith journey.
The gift that Sylvia received wasn’t just a sense of belonging; it was a sense of purpose. Over time, St. Luke’s has become her spiritual gym, a place where her faith is exercised and strengthened through meaningful relationships and acts of service. From working with youth to serving communion, Sylvia found herself growing into a new role—both as a learner and as a guide for others.
Today, Sylvia reflects on her journey with gratitude: “This is the life I have dreamed of—from personal salvation to community service, God’s guidance has been a constant companion in my faith journey.” St. Luke’s, she says, has given her the tools to live out her faith with confidence, courage, and love.
Through your continued support, St. Luke’s remains a place where individuals like Sylvia find their spiritual home, grow in faith, and step forward to serve others with grace. In fact, her husband Ji was baptized this past January! Together, we are building a community that embraces all who enter, nurturing the journey of faith in every heart.
