Time in the Center of the Circle: Lisa Ramsey’s Story
As family mottos go, Lisa Ramsey embodies the Ramsey credo– Ramsey’s show up. Despite some introvert tendencies, Lisa’s heart compels her to action in caring for those around her. Seeking a church home, she wanted a congregation that was more than just a place to worship; she sought an active place where she and her family could act and effect positive change in the congregation, the community and the world.
The doer role comes naturally to Lisa. What doesn’t come quite so easily is being the one who needs help. When diagnosed with leukemia, Lisa needed help, but asking for it still wasn’t easy until offered some advice that changed her perspective. A wise friend reminded her: we have seasons in our lives. Sometimes we create the circle that provides support, and sometimes, we have to take our turn at the center of the circle.
During Lisa’s time at the center, St. Luke’s provided the support circle in practical ways — arranging meals, driving her 3 kids to events, etc. Just as vital was the emotional support – members of the congregation holding her in prayer, wrapping her in a prayer shawl, and sending messages of love, hope and encouragement always. During those difficult days St. Luke’s reminded Lisa of the strength of her church family and showed her how to live in grace by accepting that love and help.
Delighted to be healthy again – though she does appreciate the many who still inquire – Lisa relishes the many ways St. Luke’s evolves to serve a constantly changing world and help future generations to know just how much God loves them.
The generosity of this faith community – in time, in spirit, and, yes, in financial support – is all part of what makes Lisa’s testimony what it is. St. Luke’s is a generous community, in so many ways. And that generosity is critical to fueling this congregation’s capacity to minister to and offer spiritual transformation and spiritual community in people’s lives. In recognizing the impact this congregation has in people’s lives, we also celebrate the generosity and discipleship that makes it possible.
