Solemn Reproaches
Dear church,
As we enter Holy Week, I thought it would be appropriate to offer a little devotional based on the “Solemn Reproaches,” a series of laments often used during Good Friday services. These texts are a poignant part of the observance of Christ’s Passion, expressing the sorrow and betrayal Christ felt towards humanity that, despite his love and sacrifices, often strayed and rejected him.
Historically, the Solemn Reproaches date back to at least the 9th century. Each reproach begins with Christ expressing a specific act of love or sacrifice he has made for humanity, followed by a question or lament about why he has been repaid with betrayal or rejection.
The texts often include references to Old Testament events, drawing parallels between God’s actions for the Israelites and Christ’s actions for humanity, underscoring the continuity of God’s plan for all of our salvation.
The Solemn Reproaches serve as a powerful reminder of the depth of Christ’s love and the gravity of human sinfulness, aiming to inspire reflection, repentance, and gratitude among the faithful.
They are hard and heavy texts, to be sure, but can be a very powerful tool for reflection throughout this coming week, culminating in a greater appreciation of Easter’s significance.
I commend them to you: Solemn Reproaches Devotional
God’s peace,
Pastor Kyle
